A win for charities nationwide

A disallowance motion tabled by Independent Senator, Rex Patrick, to stop controversial new charity regulations was successful yesterday in Federal Parliament, 24 votes to 19.

Patrick’s motion followed an unanimous recommendation from the cross-party Standing Committee that the regulation be disallowed.

Australian Christian Lobby’s National Director, Wendy Francis, said,

“This is a good result. Under the proposed regulation, Christian charities, schools and churches faced increased risks of sanction if the amendments came into force.

“The proposed regulations would also have imposed a significant administrative burden on charities, diverting resources from frontline service delivery into more paperwork, having a ‘chilling effect’ on Australia’s democracy.

“The ACL commends all MPs who supported the disallowance motion,” Ms Francis said.
