What about the vulnerable?

Senator Leyonhjelm’s desire to grant the NT and ACT governments the power to introduce euthanasia and assisted suicide should be firmly rejected by the Senate, urged Australian Christian Lobby.

Senator Leyonhjelm’s 2015 bill seeks to remove the legal framework that oversees the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory governments, enabling the introduction of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Most concerning are reports of the government trading away the dignity of protecting the vulnerable for support on other legislation.

ACL Managing Director Martyn Iles said there is no reason for the Senate to debate repatriation of Territory powers in order to push the euthanasia agenda.

“It is internationally evident that there are no safeguards that make euthanasia completely safe.” Said Martyn Iles.

“We know that state-sanctioned euthanasia leads to vulnerable and elderly people being put in dangerous situations.”

“It is extremely disappointing to hear reports that the Prime Minister has struck a deal with Leyonhjelm, trading the issue of state and territory promoted suicide in exchange for support in other legislation.”
