ACT Bill Equates to Retail Suicide

The ACT Government has tabled the most radical Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill in the Nation.   Labor’s Tara Cheyne introduced the Bill today, 31st October, which will allow medical professionals, other than Doctors, to assess whether patients can access medically assisted dying for conditions that have no life expectancy time frame.

Rob Norman, Acting ACT Director for the Australian Christian Lobby said, “This ACT Government has earned its reputation as the most socially radical Government in the Nation.

“If passed into law, this Bill will allow for suicide-on-demand by folks without a terminal condition.  The ACT Government obviously has no confidence in its own medical system or palliative care services and has opted for the easy option.”

Mr. Norman said, “In the worst case two nurses will be able to assess and agree to a patient’s request to take a life-terminating substance for non-terminal conditions.  This equates to retail suicide and represents a gross failure by the Government to recognise the sanctity of human life.”

The Australian Christian Lobby calls on the ACT Government and Opposition to consult widely and listen carefully to Canberra’s faith leaders before moving any form of this Bill into law.
