The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has welcomed the Allan Government’s decision to forego a second injecting room in Melbourne’s CBD.
Victorian State Director of the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), Jasmine Yuen, said, “The failed North Richmond injecting room has caused more harm than good to drug users and the local community. The experimental facility has sparked outcry among Melbourne city residents and businesses who have successfully lobbied the government to ditch the plan of another such facility in the CBD. We congratulate Premier Allan who, unlike her predecessor, has listened to the voice of the community.
“It is now time for the government to abandon their current approach which has been shown to prolong and complicate drug-related problems, trapping drug addicts in a vicious cycle. The compassionate solution to address the dire conditions faced by many drug addicts in relation to their mental health and wellbeing is to assist them to get off drugs for good rather than supporting them to continue.”
ACL calls on the government to review the North Richmond injecting room and establish rehabilitation programs to truly save lives and tackle destructive drug-induced social behaviour.
