The Labor Government today refused to fix a serious flaw in its Abortion Legislation Reform Bill 2023, which permits a woman to abort a baby, simply because it’s a girl.
Peter Abetz, WA State Director of the Australian Christian Lobby congratulated the Hon Kate Doust (Labor) for moving an amendment to outlaw sex selection abortions. ‘This would have brought WA in line with South Australia’s Termination of Pregnancy Act 2021.
“It is to WA Labor and Green members shame that they did not support this amendment, even though their parties had given their members a conscience vote.
“The fact that every other member of the Legislative Council voted in favour of banning sex selection abortions, shows there are compelling reasons to include this clause in the legislation.
“The overwhelming majority of West Australians understand that it is abhorrent to allow a baby to be aborted simply because it is a girl’.
“The Labor Party used to pride itself for standing up for the underdog, but clearly, loyalty to the Party was a higher priority for the Labor members than protecting little girls.”
Peter Abetz concluded, “I had written to every member of the Legislative Council informing them that:
- Research by Latrobe University shows that in some communities in Australia, 125 boys are being born for every 100 girls – clear evidence of sex selection abortion being practiced.
- Sex selection abortions in nations such as China and India have resulted in over 100 million fewer girls than boys.
- in 2013, Victorian Doctor, Mark Hobart, was reported to APRHA, and faced a disciplinary hearing for failing to refer an Indian couple for an abortion because they said they wanted a boy and not a girl.”
