All women should be protected from coercion

The Queensland Labor government must show consistency in their attempt to ensure women are protected from coercion, urges the Australian Christian Lobby.

State cabinet’s support for new measures against image-based abuse which will make it an offence not only to share compromising images, but also threatening to share them, should spark a boarder debate on the issue of coercion.

“It is great to see the government taking a hard stand on threats against a person in this context, however this same level of protection should be given to women in other situations,” commented Wendy Francis, ACL state director.

“We know that Jackie Trad’s radical abortion bill has absolutely no protections for women who feel threatened or coerced into an abortion, which will leave women in extremely vulnerable situations.”

More and more stories are emerging of women being pressured into having an abortion. For the government to be consistent, they must ensure that all women are protected against coercion and threats in all circumstances. We cannot pick and choose,” said Mrs Francis.
