Care, not assisted suicide, needed right now – Shelve the Health Committee report during COVID-19

Today’s high-level report on voluntary assisted dying is unwelcome at this extremely difficult time, according to the Australian Christian Lobby. The Health Committee made recommendations today for the Palaszczuk government-commissioned review on assisted suicide laws.

“Our parliamentarians and health workers are rightly concentrated on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and its threat to the frail and elderly”, ACL Qld director Wendy Francis said, “With Australia in the grip of the COVID-19 crisis, Queensland MPs must reject the Committee’s recommendations for assisted suicide and the underlying message that some lives are not worth living.”

“Precious resources and time should be devoted to the Committee’s 77 prior recommendations to improve Queensland’s palliative care system, particularly in rural and regional areas.”
