University free speech is a virtue not a vice

The Australian Christian Lobby welcomes comments made by university chancellors calling for free speech to remain on campuses.

“There should always be freedom of speech when it comes to discussing ideas. In fact, there would be no democracy without this freedom to discuss, disagree and defend ideas. Universities which value diversity should also value a diversity of ideas,” said Martyn Iles, ACL’s managing director.

“Disagreement helps students to critically consider and analyse positions they hold and ideas they accept as truth, which can ultimately lead to better-formed judgements and beliefs.”

“We must start treating debate and disagreement as a virtue instead of a vice,” urged Mr Iles.
