Sexting has no place in Tas education system

Comments made by Tasmanian Family Planning Chief Executive Cedric Manen welcoming school programs teaching ‘safe’ sexting are inexcusable says the Australian Christian Lobby.

Mark Brown, ACL Tasmanian Director said, “It is impossible for Manen to defend his position on programs like this being taught in Tasmanian schools.”

“It is not the role of teachers or schools to promote the early sexualisation and objectification of schoolgirls.”

“Education Minster Jeremy Rockliff needs to clarify whether the government supports teaching underage children how to engage in the illegal activity of sexting.”

“Parents send their children to school for them to learn how to read and write, not the ‘right’ way to send explicit images of themselves so they cannot be identified if the image falls into the wrong hands,” Mark Brown said.

ACL believes programs like ‘The Art of Sexting’ which endorse illegal and degrading behaviour have no place in the Tasmanian education system.
